Maretlwane is a 200 hectare property in the heart of the Magaliesberg, on the Maretlwane river which has its origin at Castle Gorge, one of the most beautiful gorges to be found in the area. The river runs through the entire property, offering refreshing swims in pristine rock pools. Maretlwane is a game conservancy, boasting species such as kudu, gemsbok, wildebeest, nyala, zebra, giraffe and impala. We have wonderful bird life and a large variety of indigenous trees and grasses.
The Maretlwane LodgeThe Maretlwane Lodge is a tastefully furnished, self-catering “home in the bush” which provides comfortable accommodation for up to 10 people. Two separate wings share a common living area. Each wing has two bedrooms sharing their own “stoep”, kitchenette, shower and toilet, which makes it semi-independent. The common area has a central fireplace warming two lounges, a dining room and fully equipped kitchen which is serviced daily. A thatched lapa with a wooden deck overlooking the river provides a perfect sunset drinks setting. Next to the lapa is a magnificent braai area with plenty of seating space. We request that you supply your own wood and charcoal please. We also provide a Weber and a Potjie. The Lodge is off the grid - solar lighting and gas for hot water and cooking add to the bushveld experience, but electrical appliances other than those drawing light current such as cell phone chargers cannot be accommodated.

Location
Roughly halfway between Hartebeespoort dam and Rustenburg, hugging the Magaliesburg lies the town of Mooinooi. Essentially a mining town it rests in a valley used to grow citrus and mine chrome, and makes for wonderfully easy weekend breaks for those after a hard week's work.
Mooinooi's proximity to the Magaliesburg promises outdoor activities, particularly hiking, sightseeing and golf. Not too far from Hartebeespoortdam with the Chameleon village, snake and animal farm, elephant sanctuary, monkey sanctuary and Buffelspoortdam.
Sugarbush Hill lies on the northern slopes of a peaceful valley in the Magaliesberg Mountain Range. We are on the Rustenburg side of the range, about 50 km from Hartebeespoort Dam and 25 km from Rustenburg. It takes just over an hour to get to us from Fourways and an hour and a quarter from the eastern suburbs of Pretoria.
All our units are set at the foot of a hill and all have their own braais, carports and deep stoeps with panoramic mountain views. Guests are welcome to explore the 11Ha of indigenous bush.
Sugarbush Hill gets its name from the Common Sugarbush, Protea caffra which can be found in abundance on the hillside just behind the units. All the cottages have been named after indigenous plants found in the Magaliesberg area. Wherever possible, alien species have been done away with or replaced with indigenous plants. As a result, our bird life is prolific and slowly but surely we are creating a natural haven where city folk can enjoy the peace and tranquility of the Buffelspoort valley. We have identified and tagged a lot of indigenous trees on our property, so if you would like to brush up on your tree knowledge, bring along a tree book and spend some time looking them up.
We can now proudly say that we are a 3-star establishment, after having been graded by the Tourism Grading Council of S.A. This means that our guests can be assured of certain minimum standards.
Things to do on and around Sugarbush Hill
We do provide limited entertainment for our guests,TV in lapa, pool, darts, jacuzzi, table tennis, there is also a lot to see and do in our area if you want to. A lot of our guests simply relax and enjoy the peace and quiet.
We have a swimming pool, which is essential for those hot summer days. We have put bird identification books in all our units, so don't forget your binoculars if you are a birder.
There is 11Ha of indigenous bush to explore, with a stunning view from the top of the hill. However, if you want structured hiking trails, we can direct you to some of the best hiking in the area. Most of our guests use Kranskloof, a 400Ha farm that is literally 5km from Sugarbush. The farm boasts a choice of marked trails, which take you through kloofs with running water and some of the best scenery that the area has to offer.
